Thomas Jandl
Vice President
Thomas Jandl holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and an M.A. in International Development from American University in Washington, D.C., and a B.A. in Political Science from San Diego State University. His academic work focused on trade, investment and development, decentralization, regionalism, and political economy, with a focus on Vietnam and SE Asia. His economic policy consulting covers advising on trade integration, investment attraction, and economic upgrading to improve productivity.
He has extensive experience in government relations and public diplomacy. Prior to his academic career, he founded and directed a non-profit organization devising and promoting legislative support for U.S. and European assistance to Russia for nuclear disarmament and cleanup. In this capacity, he presided over a roundtable series bringing together members of the executive branches, parliaments and private sectors from Russia, the United States, the European Union and Norway. The effort resulted in legislation providing support for Russia's nuclear cleanup efforts, and he consulted for Members of Congress in policy formulation and legislative drafting.
He has worked as a journalist covering national security issues, and later published in academic and non-academic publications and lectured at well-known public policy institutions, including the Woodrow Wilson Center and the National Defense University. He is fluent in German and French and speaks some Italian and Spanish. Aside from his home base in the Washington, D.C. area, he has worked in Vietnam, the Dominican Republic, the Czech Republic and the Isle of Man.
"With respect to the economy, Vietnam must adapt its regulatory system to its new position; politically, the party must complete its pivot towards the West."
